The Most Valuable Skill in 2026 Isn’t Productivity. It’s Discernment
A few years ago people were bragging about hustle culture. Now half the population can’t remember why they walked into the kitchen.Honestly, modern life has become operationally ridiculous. Every day feels like somebody emptied 400 post-it notes directly into our nervous systems.
Reply to that email.
Book the dentist.
Drink more water.
Sort your pension.
Learn AI.
Stretch.
Meal prep.
Create content.
Fix your hormones.
Be emotionally available.
Reduce screen time…using an app on your phone.
And somewhere in the middle of all this chaos, Artificial Intelligence entered the room adding to the chaos, and we’ve collectively decided the problem is that people “need to use it to become more productive.”
Absolutely not. I don’t think the most valuable skill in 2026 is productivity. I think it’s discernment. The ability to tell:
- what matters
- what doesn’t
- what deserves your energy
- and what is quite frankly nonsense wrapped in a LinkedIn carousel.
Because AI has changed the game.
Not just because it can write emails and summarise meetings and help you plan your weekly shop while you’re rage-walking round Tesco wondering where your life went wrong…
…but because it has dramatically increased the volume of information, ideas, opinions, opportunities, content, notifications, decisions and digital clutter.
Humans are drowning in options.
You do not need another morning routine.
You do not need a colour-coded Notion dashboard designed by a 24-year-old productivity monk who drinks mushroom coffee and calls everything a “framework.”
You need better filters.
Discernment is deciding:
- which ideas are worth pursuing
- which opportunities are distractions
- which tools genuinely help
- which trends are panic in a shiny outfit
- and which parts of yourself should never be outsourced to a machine
Because not everything faster is better. And not everything automated is meaningful.
I think a lot of people secretly feel ashamed right now.
Ashamed they can’t keep up.
Ashamed they’re overwhelmed.
Ashamed they’ve downloaded ChatGPT or Claude and still haven’t magically transformed into a cybernetic superhuman with a six-pack and an automated inbox.
I still think most of us are figuring out a system for staying on top of the laundry, and not walking around the supermarket at a loss for what to get for dinner.
Speeding things up doesn’t always help.
That’s why I’ve become increasingly obsessed with helping humans think better in the age of AI.
Not just do more.
Not just optimise harder.
Think better.
Choose better.
Use technology intentionally instead of inhaling every new tool like a Victorian child discovering sherbet.
And honestly?
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is:
- ignore the noise
- stop doom-scrolling productivity hacks
- pick ONE important thing
- and finally get your shit done.
That’s the real work now.
