So, let’s talk about the massive, vibrating elephant in the room… the one that’s currently writing your emails, generating your social media captions, and potentially giving you a massive case of the “Expertise Anxiety.”
It’s a bit of a mind-fuck, isn’t it? You’ve spent twenty, maybe thirty years honing your craft. You’ve done the degrees, the late-night shifts, the “learning by doing,” and the agonizing over every detail of your professional life… and then along comes a shiny white box with a blinking cursor that can do in approximately 4.2 seconds what it takes you a full week to even contemplate. It feels like a punch in the gut. A very high-tech, algorithmically generated punch in the gut.
I’ve been hearing it everywhere lately from my coaching clients and the peeps in my community… this creeping feeling that everything we’ve built is suddenly worth about as much as a chocolate teapot in a sauna. If a machine can “do” what you do, what exactly are you getting paid for? Is your expertise actually at risk of becoming totally obsolete?
The short answer? Yes. But also, a massive, resounding NO.
The stuff that’s at risk isn’t actually your expertise, it’s your positioning. And that’s exactly why I wrote my new book, “You, Me & ChatGPT” (which you can grab right here on Amazon if you want the full-strength version of this rant lol).
Most of the panic we’re seeing right now in the business world isn’t actually about technology; it’s about the fact that AI is holding up a giant, neon mirror to how shallow most professional “thinking” has become.
Let’s be real for a second… a lot of what we’ve called “expertise” for the last decade has actually just been “knowing where the buttons are” or “knowing the standard templates.” If your value proposition is that you can write a standard contract, design a basic logo, or summarize a meeting, then yeah… you are in a world of trouble. DOOMED!!!!! (Okay, maybe not doomed, but definitely needing a pivot).
AI isn’t replacing deep expertise; it’s exposing the fluff. It’s a commodity engine. It’s the ultimate “copy-paste” machine. If what you do can be boiled down to a repeatable process with no soul, no ethics, and no specific perspective, then AI is coming for that task.
But here’s the thing… that isn’t your expertise. That’s just the manual labor of your profession. The real risk isn’t that the machine is smarter than you; it’s that you’ve been positioning yourself as a “doer” rather than a “thinker.” As an AI business strategist, I see this all the time… peeps getting bogged down in the tools and the prompts and the “how-to” while their actual brilliance, the stuff that people actually pay the big bucks for, stays buried under a pile of admin.
It’s a Positioning Problem, Not a Tech Problem
When we talk about human-first AI, what we’re really talking about is moving up the value chain to the stuff a robot literally cannot do because it doesn’t have a pulse, a past, or a sense of “taste.”
Think about it… AI has no “taste.” It has no “judgment.” It has no “ethics” (other than the guardrails its programmers slapped on it to stop it from being a total dick). It doesn’t understand the nuance of why a client is crying on a Zoom call or why a specific business strategy feels “off” even if the data says it’s right.
Most of the anxiety you’re feeling is because you’ve spent years competing on “capability” (I can do X) instead of “authority” (I know WHY we should do X, and I know how it fits into the bigger picture).
If you feel like your expertise is at risk, it’s probably because you haven’t yet learned how to use AI as your “scaffolding” rather than your replacement. We’ve all been taught to be the builders. But in the world of AI for small business, you need to stop being the bricklayer and start being the architect. The architect still needs to know how bricks work, but they aren’t the ones getting their hands dirty for minimum wage anymore lol.
This is the central theme of “You, Me & ChatGPT.” It isn’t a book about which prompts to type into a box to get a half-decent blog post. God knows there are enough of those “cheat sheets” floating around the internet written by people who were “Crypto Experts” five minutes ago. No, this is about thinking clearly in the middle of all the noise.
The Reckoning of the “Prompt Monkey”
If your plan for the next five years is to just become the best “Prompt Engineer” in your niche, you are basically racing to the bottom of a very deep, very crowded pit.
Prompting is a fleeting skill. The machines are getting better at understanding us every single day. Eventually, the “tech” part of AI will be invisible. It’ll just be how we work. So, if your whole identity is tied up in “I know how to talk to the AI,” you’re going to find yourself obsolete pretty damn fast.
The real winners, the human-first professionals, are the ones who use AI to amplify their depth. They use it to do the heavy lifting of data analysis, drafting, and research so they can spend their time on the high-level shit:
- Perspective: Your unique take on the world based on your lived experience.
- Empathy: Understanding the human cost of business decisions.
- Context: Knowing that what worked for Client A will absolutely tank for Client B because of their specific company culture.
- Taste: Knowing when something is “good enough” vs. when it is actually “remarkable.”
AI is great at “average.” It is the king of “mediocre.” If you are happy being average, then yes, your expertise is at risk. But if you are willing to step into your role as a leader/strategist/creative who uses technology to go deeper… then you’re not just safe, you’re about to become more valuable than ever.
Why “Thinking Clearly” is the New Superpower
We are living through a massive noise event, and the only way to survive it without losing your mind (or your business) is to reclaim your ability to think for yourself.
It sounds simple, right? “Just think clearly, Julie.” But it’s fucking hard when every influencer is shouting about a new tool every three hours and telling you that you’re “falling behind.”
In the book, I talk about this idea of “scaffolding.” AI is the scaffolding that holds up your ideas while you build something great. It’s not the building itself. If you take the scaffolding away and nothing is standing… well, you didn’t have a business, you had a bot.
I want you to take a second and ask yourself the “uncomfortable question”: If a machine can do the “output” of my job in seconds, what is the “outcome” I actually provide for my clients?
The “output” is the report. The “outcome” is the peace of mind the CEO feels knowing their strategy is sound.
The “output” is the logo. The “outcome” is the brand identity that makes a founder feel confident enough to charge triple their rates.
AI can do the output. It cannot, and will not, ever be able to own the outcome. That’s on you. That’s your expertise. And honestly, it’s the only thing that matters.
So, where do we go from here?
You can either sit around waiting for the “AI Apocalypse” to take your job, or you can decide right now to become the person who steers the ship.
Look, I get it. It’s overwhelming. You feel like you need to learn a thousand new things. But you don’t. You actually need to unlearn the habit of being a “doer” and start practicing being a “leader.”
If you’re feeling the “ick” about AI, it’s usually because you’re trying to fit it into your old way of working. You’re trying to make the robot do your chores while you still feel guilty for not doing them yourself lol. Stop that.
I want to help you figure out exactly where you stand in this new landscape. Because once you know where your resistance is coming from, you can actually do something about it.
First step: Go and get the book. You, Me & ChatGPT is your guide to the human-first approach. It’s funny, it’s sweary, and it’ll help you stop worrying about the tech and start focusing on your brilliance again.
Second step: Take my AI Adoption Quiz. This isn’t some boring corporate assessment. It’s a quick way to find out if you’re an “AI Avoider,” an “AI Overwhelmed,” or someone who is ready to lead. It’ll give you a clear map of how to build your authority and position yourself so that you are literally irreplaceable.
CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE AI ADOPTION QUIZ (and let’s figure out how to make you the most dangerous person in your industry… in a good way, obviously).
And if you are READY to take action, drop me a line julie@juliecreffield.com and lets actually get cracking.
Your expertise isn’t at risk. Your status quo is. And honestly? The status quo was getting a bit boring anyway, wasn’t it?
Let’s go get it.
