7 Things to consider before joining a group programme
Did you know the term Mastermind was coined in
So yes…group programmes, masterminds, incubators, accelerators…they might seem like a new age (online) thing, but gathering people together to learn, activate and make change is hardly new.
It can however be overwhelming when looking for something to join and so with close to 20 years experience of running online group programmes, and a decade before thats experience of engaging and activating people on mass in the “real world” here are some things to consider…
Joining a group programme can be a game-changer for your business or personal growth. The right one will challenge you, connect you with like-minded individuals, and give you the structure and accountability to take action. But not all programmes are created equal, and before you commit, it’s worth taking a step back to make sure it’s the right fit for you.
Here are seven things to consider before signing up for a group programme:
1. Your Goals & Readiness
Before you jump in, ask yourself: What do I actually want from this experience? Is it growth, accountability, networking, or a specific skill? Make sure the programme aligns with what you genuinely need right now. The best programme in the world won’t help if you’re not in a place to take action.
Lots of online group programmes teach you a process but there is little to no actual accountability or bespoke support to help you apply what you are learning, a lot of programme also avoid in their marketing talking about what YOU need to do to get the benefits, so be mindful of that…programmes only “WORK” if you DO the work!!!
2. The Facilitator’s Experience & Approach
Who’s leading the programme? Have they achieved what they’re promising to help you with? Check their track record, testimonials, and teaching style. Some facilitators are hands-on, while others provide a framework and let participants figure things out. Be sure their approach works for you.
Also how much time will you get with the person leading the programme, how much time, effort and energy will they personally give you and your business to help you achieve your goals? Ask this explicitly when considering a programme.
3. Group Size & Dynamics
The magic of a group programme lies in its members. A small, intimate cohort fosters deep connections and personalized feedback, while a larger group offers broader perspectives. Consider what you prefer—do you thrive in small mastermind-style groups or larger communities with diverse voices?
This is a big one. A mastermind is NOT 40 people on a Zoom call. Ask about cohort size and also think about how groups will “form, storm, norm and perform” (Tuckman 1964) and what impact this might have on your ability to thrive in the group.
4. The Level of Support & Access
Not all group programmes offer the same level of support. Will you have direct access to the facilitator? Is there 1:1 coaching included? Are there live calls, or is it all pre-recorded content? Make sure the level of interaction matches your learning style and needs.
What happens if you need more support, what if you have differing learning styles, or additional support needs?
5. The Programme’s Structure & Deliverables
Look beyond the marketing and ask, What will I walk away with? Does the programme have a clear roadmap? Is it practical and actionable, or just a lot of theory? Be clear on what you’ll be doing each week and what the final outcome should be.
Does this match where you are in your business? Will you need a certain amount of additional resources (time, money, knowledge) to implement the advice?
6. The Financial & Time Investment
A programme is an investment, both financially and in terms of time. Be honest about whether you have the capacity to commit. If you’re constantly stretched thin, will you realistically be able to implement what’s being taught? Also, consider the payment structure—does it offer value for the price?
Will paying for a programme put you in financial insecurity (either from a business or personal perspective), if so DO NOT register. Putting things on a credit card is NOT good advice. When seeing financial claims, ask specifically about the people who do not reach that level even after doing the work, and why.
7. What Happens After the Programme Ends?
One of the biggest pitfalls of group programmes is what happens after they finish. Will you be left on your own, or is there ongoing support? Some programmes offer alumni communities, follow-up calls, or next-level opportunities. Make sure you won’t feel stranded the moment it ends.
Also think about how you like to close chapters of your life and business…endings are just as important as beginnings.
Final Thoughts
A well-designed group programme can accelerate your progress, introduce you to amazing people, and open up new opportunities—but only if it’s the right fit for you.
I have been part of a mastermind for more than 8 years…and the support is unlike anything else.
Over the past 30 years I have designed and delivered group programmes of every size and scope imaginable, written policy for programme that involved 70K individuals, in person retreats for 20, and ran high level masterminds for 5. I’ve offered group challenges that cost £ 5 and had 600 members, and £ 5K that have had 12.
I have also invested in group programmes at every price point…and the phrase “you get what you pay for” is 100% NOT true.
